FOR BROWNIES

Tanasi Council Leaders' Guide For:
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Scavenger Hike Adventures Try-It!!!

By Kat and John LaFevre/Tanasi Council Partners

Brownies must complete 4 activities in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Brownie troops may choose up to 4 out of the 14 Scavenger Hike Adventures in the trailbook.   Scouts will tally their points for "treasures found" and must attain either "Pioneer Scout" or "Frontier Explorer" level for the hike to apply towards the special Scavenger Hike Adventures Try-It.  A signed and dated certificate of completion must be approved by leader for each of the hikes (certificates included in each girl's trail guide).

The interactive trail book, Scavenger Hike Adventures, includes a diverse selection of hikes with a mix of 5 easy, 5 moderate and 4 extreme challenges  (Ranging from 1/2 mile to over 10 miles.)  The hikes accommodate a wide range of physical ability as scouts follow clues and search for and find cultural, natural and historical treasures along the trails.

Brownies may also substitute as many as 2 of the following activities in place of hikes. 1. Visit Sugarlands Visitor Center, view the movie and explore the museum. Write a one-page observation  report or draw a picture of two favorite plants or animals in the park. 2. Meet all requirements to become a "Junior Ranger" in the park.  3.  Meet with a park ranger and learn about the important issues facing the park. 4. Visit Cataloochee Valley and find at least 5 elk (dusk is recommended time). 5. Attend a park ranger walk or talk.

For Scout Leaders, the book is like having a Pioneer, a Cherokee Indian and a Mountain Guide hiking along with you. Leader Suggestion: Divide your group into two or three smaller groups and each leader(s) reads the clues to that group.  It works best if only the leader(s) carry the books as scouts search for treasures. Girls tally points attained and fill out certificates in their books at the end of the hike.
